A freshwater snail of the family Ploceidae (illustration) that resembles a miniature snail. The shell is long and ovate, 1 cm high and 0.6 cm wide. It is somewhat thin but strong, and pale yellow to yellowish brown in color. The coil has five layers, each with three spiral ribs, and five in the body layer. The shell opening is ovate, with thickened edges in adults. The operculum is ovate, flat, and calcareous. It is found from Honshu to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and China, and lives on gravel and algae on the water bottom. From spring to summer, it lays string-like egg masses containing 30 to 60 eggs arranged in two rows.

タニシを小型にしたような形をした淡水産のマメタニシ科の巻貝(イラスト)。殻は長卵形で,高さ1cm,幅0.6cm。やや薄いが堅固で,淡黄色~黄褐色をしている。巻きは5層で,各層には3本の螺肋(らろく)があり,体層では5本ある。殻口は卵形で,成貝ではその縁が厚くなっている。ふたは卵形で平たく石灰質。本州~九州,朝鮮半島,中国に分布し,水底のれきや藻類の上にすむ。春から夏に紐状の卵塊を産むが,その中に30~60個の卵が2列に並んでいる。
