...the Jagiellonian dynasty was succeeded by the Piast dynasty through the son of Eližbieta, sister of Casimir the Great, but the Piast dynasty continued to rule the surrounding principalities (finally dying out in 1675). Since the end of the 18th century, the rulers before Mieszko I have been considered mere legends. Unlike Mieszko I, they are not mentioned in German or Czech sources, and only appear in Gar Anonym's "Polish Annals".

[The Piast Dynasty]
(1) Formation of the Polish state Poland, a land far removed from the classical ancient world of Greece and Rome, began to appear in written records only at the end of the 10th century. A Jew living in Spain named Ibrahim ibn Jakub came to Krakow, which at the time was part of the Moravian state, and left behind a record of Mieszko I (?-992), chief of the Polanie tribe based in Gniezno, of the Piast dynasty. The name Poland is derived from the name of this tribe.
