Yamamogashi - Yamamogashi

An evergreen tall tree of the Proteaceae family (APG classification: Proteaceae). It grows to a height of about 10 meters. The leaves are obelliptical or obovate-lanceolate, 5-15 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, and have sparse serrations on the entire edge or the upper half of the edge. From July to September, it produces 10-15 cm long racemes in the leaf axils, and two white flowers bloom densely at the end of the pedicel. It has four perianth pieces, which are thin tubes that are in contact with each other when in bud, and turn over when in bloom, with one stamen on each inner upper part. The berries are elliptical, about 1 cm long, and ripen to black. It grows in evergreen forests, and is distributed from the southern part of the Chubu region to the west of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, and China and Indochina. The name comes from the fact that the plant resembles Mogashi (a local name for the Moth tree of the Moth family) and grows in mountainous areas.

ヤマモガシ科（APG分類：ヤマモガシ科）の常緑高木。高さ約10メートル。葉は倒楕円(とうだえん)状または倒卵状披針(ひしん)形で長さ5～15センチメートル、幅1.5～4センチメートル、全縁または縁(へり)の上半部にまばらな鋸歯(きょし)がある。7～9月、葉腋(ようえき)に長さ10～15センチメートルの総状花序をつくり、花柄の先に2個ずつ白色花を密に開く。花被片(かひへん)は4枚、つぼみのときは互いに接して細い管状、開花すると反転し、内側上部に各1本の雄しべをつける。液果は楕円形で長さ約1センチメートル、黒色に熟す。常緑樹林内に生え、中部地方南部以西の本州から四国、九州、沖縄、および中国、インドシナに分布する。名は、全体がモガシ（ホルトノキ科のホルトノキの一地方名）に似ており、山地に生えることに由来する。
