An American cartoon character. He is a powerful sailor with a pipe in his mouth and an anchor tattooed on his upper arm, and if he is in a pinch he becomes 100 times stronger by eating spinach. He first appeared in 1929 as a supporting character in ES Segar's Thimble Theater cartoon, and the Fleischer brothers made him into a cartoon film. In 1932, he appeared in one of the "Betty (Boop) Series" and it was well received, with 105 films being made between 1933 and 1942. His co-stars include his girlfriend Olive Oyl, his enemy Bluto the giant, and Wimpy the hamburger lover. Famous Studios continued to produce him until 1957. A TV series was also made from 1961 to 1963, but it was nowhere near the wild fun of the Fleischer era.
