Red sparrow (Deileptenia elpenor)

Japanese: ベニスズメ(紅雀) - ベニスズメ（英語表記）Deileptenia elpenor

A lepidopteran insect of the Sphingidae family. With a wingspan of about 6cm, both the body and wings are a beautiful red color. The forewings are brown, and the half of the hindwings near the base is black. The dorsal surface of the abdomen is brown, with a thin red band running down the center of the dorsal surface and black on the sides at the base. It is distributed from Europe to Siberia, China, and throughout Japan. It appears in summer and often flies to lights, but is also often seen visiting flowers during the day in search of nectar. The larvae are 8cm long. There is variation in body color, and they are divided into brown and green types. Both have fine black lines scattered throughout, a row of black markings on both sides of each segment, and black eye-like markings around the first and second abdominal segments.

A bird of the family Acanthidae (illustration) in the order Passerine. Total length is about 10 cm. It is smaller than a sparrow, and the sexes are heterochromatic. The male's reproductive plumage is crimson red with small white spots all over the body, and the wings and tail are black. The non-reproductive plumage is less reddish and reddish brown. The female's back is yellowish brown, and the lower back is red. Both sexes have red beaks. It is distributed discontinuously from India through Thailand to Bali. It lives in reed beds, grasslands and brush along wetlands and waterways, and feeds on seeds. It breeds monogamously, and builds a spherical nest with a short tube-shaped entrance on the side in thorny brush along the water's edge.

スズメ目カエデチョウ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約10cm。スズメより小さく，雌雄異色。雄の生殖羽は全身紅赤色で白小斑が点在し，翼と尾は黒い。非生殖羽は赤みが少なくなり赤褐色。雌は背面黄褐色で，腰が赤い。くちばしは雌雄とも赤い。インドからタイを経てバリ島まで不連続に分布している。湿地や水路べりのヨシ原，草地，やぶ地にすみ，種子を食べる。一夫一妻で繁殖し，水べりのとげのあるやぶの中に側方に短いチューブのついた入口がある球形の巣をつくる。
