Chalderan (English spelling)

…In 1514, a battle took place in the fields of Çaldıran (Persian: Chālderān), about 40 km northeast of Lake Van in eastern Turkey, between Selim I of the Ottoman Empire and Ismail I of the Safavid Empire. The Safavids adopted Shiite Islam as their state religion, and conducted political and religious propaganda activities in eastern Anatolia, where many Shiite Muslims lived, which led to frequent anti-Ottoman popular riots in the region.
