A perennial plant of the Solanaceae family, it is one of the poisonous plants. It grows wild in Western Asia and central and southern Europe, and is cultivated in various countries for medicinal purposes. It grows to a height of about 1-2m, with alternate leaves that are 10-15cm long and oval. In July and August, flower stalks appear in the leaf axils, and drooping, bell-shaped, reddish purple flowers are shallowly divided into five lobes. After flowering, it produces spherical fruits that are green at first and turn purple-black when ripe. The whole plant contains alkaloids, but the roots and leaves are mainly used for medicinal purposes. It has analgesic, mydriatic, and antiperspirant properties, and is used as a raw material for the manufacture of atropine, hyoscyamine, etc. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
