Psychologist. Born in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture. Adopted by the Matsumoto family. Graduated from Tokyo Imperial University and went on to graduate school. A student of Motora Yujiro. Guided by American psychologist George T. Ladd (1842-1921), he studied at Yale University, where he studied experimental psychology under scripture Edward W. After returning to Japan, he became a lecturer at Tokyo University, and was instrumental in establishing the university's psychology laboratory (1903), and also established a laboratory during his time at Kyoto Imperial University (1906-1913). Following the sudden death of Professor Motora, he became a professor at Tokyo University (1913-1925), and later became president of the Japanese Psychological Association (1927-1943). He had an early interest in training psychological engineers, and contributed to the application of psychology in many fields, including the military, industry, education, art, law, and aviation, as well as to the training of instructors. He is one of the people who built the foundations of Japanese psychology. The "psychodosology" he advocated is a science of behavior that considers humans as mental and physical beings and studies physical changes as a manifestation of the mind. He has written many books.
