An insect of the family Pyralidae in the order Lepidoptera. Wingspan is 2.5-3cm. The wings are long and slender, with the forewings black-brown. Between the silvery-white subbasal line and the inner transverse line, there is a reddish-brown band, with a pattern of the same color on the transverse veins, and the submarginal line is serrated with a strong protrusion in the center. The hind wings are white except for the edges. They are distributed throughout Japan, as well as from the Korean Peninsula through Siberia to Europe. The larvae are major pests of pines such as red pine, black pine, and todo fir, and occur twice a year in the mountains of Honshu and Hokkaido, and two to three times a year in warm regions. They mainly feed on new shoots, but they can also penetrate into the trunks and feed on the cambium, causing a large amount of sap to flow out.
