Norwegian Sea

The sea area between the west coast of Norway and the east coast of Greenland. It is separated from the Arctic Ocean by the Nansen Ridge. The deep waters of the Norwegian Sea are bordered by the Greenland-Iceland Ridge, the Faroe-Iceland Ridge, and the Wyvil-Thomson Ridge, which connects the Faroe Islands and Scotland, and the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. The Måne Ridge, which runs east-northeast through Jan Mayen Island, located almost in the center, divides the sea into the Norwegian Basin on the east side and the Greenland Basin on the west side, and the waters of the two basins are sometimes divided into the Norwegian Sea and the Greenland Sea in the narrow sense. The Norwegian Current, a continuation of the warm North Atlantic Current, flows north through the former, and the cold East Greenland Current flows south through the latter. In summer, the Norwegian Current is warmed by solar radiation, and the surface water temperature rises to nearly 12°C, but in winter, it is mixed by vertical convection, and the water temperature remains around 5°C even in the northern seas. The prefecture is also blessed with rich marine resources, including cod, herring, and salmon.

ノルウェー西岸とグリーンランド東岸に挟まれた海域。北極海とはナンセン海嶺(かいれい)によって区別される。ノルウェー海の深層水はグリーンランド・アイスランド海嶺とフェロー・アイスランド海嶺、そしてフェロー諸島とスコットランドを結ぶウィビル・トムソン海嶺によって、北大西洋の水と境されている。ほぼ中央に位置するヤン・マイエン島を通って東北東に延びるモーン海嶺が、東側のノルウェー海盆と西側のグリーンランド海盆に二分し、両海盆の海域をそれぞれ狭義のノルウェー海とグリーンランド海に区分することもある。前者の海域を暖流の北大西洋海流の続流であるノルウェー海流が北上し、後者の海域を寒流の東グリーンランド海流が南下する。ノルウェー海流は夏には太陽の放射で暖められて、表層水の温度は12℃近くに上がるが、冬には垂直的対流により混合されて、北部海域でも5℃前後の水温を維持する。またタラ、ニシン、サケなど豊かな水産資源に恵まれている。
