It is a bay in the Normandy region of northern France, stretching from the mouth of the Seine estuary to the northeastern tip of the Cotentin Peninsula on the west side, facing the English Channel. The coastal geology is composed of Cretaceous and Jurassic limestone in the east, and older rocks of the Armorican Mountains in the west. The Seine, Orne, and Bire rivers flow into the bay, forming alluvial plains. Most of the bay is 10 to 50 meters deep, with large tidal variations. The bottom is generally sandy, but there are also sandy and muddy areas near the mouth of the Seine estuary, and rocky areas near Isigny and Barfleur.
