...In the case of languages that have developed a standard language, for example, when we say "Italian," we often mean the standard language, i.e., "Standard Italian." The languages (1), (2), and (3) above are sometimes collectively called Ibero-Romance, (4), (5), and (6) Gallo-Romance, (7), (8), and (9) Italo-Romance, and (10) and (11) Balkan-Romance, but the positioning of (3) and (7) is subject to disagreement. The area where Latin and its successor Romance languages were widespread is sometimes called "Romania," but this does not completely correspond to the administrative territory of the Roman Empire.
