A volcanic island in the Bay of Naples in southern Italy. It has an area of 46 km2 and a population of 15,914 (1981). Mount Epomeo (788m) erupted several times before its eruption in 1301-02. It is known for its beautiful nature, hot springs, and Greek ruins, and has been sung by many poets. Vittoria Colonna, a member of the Avalos family that ruled the island in the 15th and 16th centuries, married Marquis Ferrante and was a beautiful and intelligent poet who later captured the soul of Michelangelo.
