An ethnic minority group found in a wide area from Hunan, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Yunnan south of the Yangtze River in China to the mountainous regions of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and other parts of Southeast Asia. They are also called Man. In old Chinese documents, they are also written as Zhong, Zhong, and Zhong. There are approximately 2.14 million Yao people living in China (1990), and they form Yao autonomous counties in various places. It is estimated that there are 294,000 people (1978) living in Vietnam, 36,000 people (1988) in Thailand, and 13,000 people (1975) in Laos. 中国長江(揚子江)以南の湖南,広西チワン(壮)族自治区,広東,貴州,雲南から東南アジアのベトナム,ラオス,タイなどの山岳地帯にかけて広範囲にわたり分布する少数民族。マンManなどともよばれる。中国の古い文献には猺,徭,傜,などとも記される。中国領内に居住するヤオ族は約214万人(1990)で,各地にヤオ族自治県を構成している。また,ベトナムには29万4000人(1978),タイには3万6000人(1988),ラオスには1万3000人(1975)が居住していると推定されている。
