...In May 1950, the Military Act, the Articles for the Government of the Navy, and the Disciplinary Laws of the Coast Guard were combined to form the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which remains in place to this day.

Regarding the former military, the Navy and Army Criminal Code was promulgated in August 1872 (Meiji 5), and separated into Army and Navy Criminal Codes by proclamation in 1881. In 1908, it was fully revised and streamlined to become the Army Criminal Code and the Navy Criminal Code, which continued until their abolition in May 1947. The Military Criminal Code was also applied to military personnel (including civilian employees) who committed crimes, non-military personnel who committed certain crimes (such as assault on sentries), and prisoners of war.
