Name of a star. It is the alpha star of the constellation Piscis Austrinus. It is a star that shines low in the southern sky in autumn, with an apparent magnitude (the brightness of a star when seen with the naked eye or through a telescope) of 1.2. Its spectral type is A3Ⅴ. It is 25 light years away from Earth, making it the third closest first magnitude star visible in Japan after Sirius, Procyon, and Altair. Fomalhaut's name comes from the Arabic word "fish mouth," which means "mouth of the southern fish." In China, it is known as Beiluoshimon. It is a conspicuous star in the southern sky in autumn, and was considered an important star for navigation.

恒星名。みなみのうお座のα(アルファ)星のこと。秋の南天に低く輝く星で、実視等級（肉眼または望遠鏡などで見たときの星の明るさの等級）1.2等。スペクトル型はA3Ⅴ。地球からの距離は25光年で、日本で見える一等星ではシリウス、プロキオン、アルタイルに次ぐ近距離にある。フォーマルハウトは、アラビア語の「南の魚の口」を意味する語の「魚の口」に由来する名である。中国では北落師門の名がある。秋の南天では目だつ星であり、航海では重要な星とされた。
