1793‐1886 British chemical industrialist. Born in Dublin, he served on the side of the rebels in the Peninsular War in Spain, returning to the UK in 1814. He then worked on the manufacture of chemicals such as potassium cyanide. In 1823, he introduced the technology for manufacturing sodium carbonate using the Leblanc process, built a soda factory in Liverpool, and in 1828, together with the Irishman Josaias C. Gamble, added a factory in St. Helens. From then on, he established factories in Newton, Widnes, Flint, and other places until he retired from the industry in 1857, laying the foundations for Britain's alkali industry.
