...The major playwrights of this movement can be broadly divided into two types: passionate geniuses and sentimental, emotionally unstable, as can be seen in the contrast between Klinger and J. Lenz. Representative plays that can be classified by their tendency include Goethe's Götz von Berlichingen (1773) and Klinger's The Twins (1776), which depict a "great man" who rejects all standards of life that stand in the way of the infinite realization of one's true nature; Schiller's The Rebellion at Fiesco (1783) and Plots and Love (1784), which sing of the revolutionary demand for universal human freedom; Johann Anton Leisewitz's (1752-1806) Julius in Tarent (1776) and Schiller's The Robbers (1781), which call for individual freedom within society; and Wagner's Heinrich Leopold, which appeals for justice for the socially oppressed. These works can be broadly divided into two categories: Wagner (1747-79)'s Infanticide (1776) and Lenz's The Soldiers (1776). The basic views on the nature of literature presented by these original geniuses were inherited by the classical works of Goethe and Schiller, and even Romantic literature, and were important statements that led to 20th century Expressionist literature. However, the protest and rebellion aspects of this movement against the established order ended up being a transitional phenomenon and rapidly declined.
