An island located in the northern Visayas in the central Philippines. It faces the Bicol Peninsula on Luzon. It has a hilly topography, and coconut palms, rice, and corn are cultivated on the coastal plains, while cattle are raised in the interior. It is considered the frontier of Luzon's development, and has many settlers. It once produced high-quality timber, but due to excessive logging during the Spanish era, 70% of the island is now grassland. The main city is Masbate in the middle of the east coast, and has an airport. It has an area of 3,269 ^km2 and a population of 585,000 (1980).

フィリピン諸島中央部のビサヤ諸島北部に位置する島。ルソン島のビコール半島と相対する。丘陵性の地形で，海岸平地ではココヤシ，米，トウモロコシの栽培，奥地では牧牛が行われる。ルソン島の開拓前線と考えられ，入植者が多い。かつて良質の木材を産したが，スペイン時代の乱伐のため，今では島の７割が草原となっている。中心都市は東海岸中部のマスバテで，空港がある。3269km²。58万5000人（1980）。
