An ancient city in Babylonia. Barijat, now Iran. Around 2017 BC, Ishbi-Ela, an Akkadian from Mari, founded the dynasty here. The Larsa dynasty, established around the same time, ruled the southern part of Babylonia, while Isin ruled the northern part. The fifth king, Lipit-Ishtar (reigned 1934-24 BC), is known for compiling a legal code more than a century before Hammurabi. It was conquered in the mid-18th century BC by Rim-Sin, the last king of the Larsa dynasty. The Isin-Larsa dynasty is known for the successive kings' revival of the Sumerian language and the encouragement of the arts and sciences. It was eventually conquered by Hammurabi, the sixth king of the First Babylonian dynasty.
