1896‐1974 Palestinian Arab political leader. Born into a distinguished family in Jerusalem. Educated at a Jewish school in Jerusalem, Al-Azhar Academy in Cairo, and a law school in Istanbul, he participated in the Arab Revolt during World War I. He was arrested at a mass demonstration in Jerusalem in 1920, but was pardoned with the intervention of British authorities, and became Mufti of Jerusalem in 1921. In 1922, he became Speaker of the Supreme Muslim Council, which had the authority to manage the waqfs in Palestine. In the conflict with Jewish immigrants that intensified after the Western Wall incident in 1929, he incited religious conflict and even stimulated armed activity by Jewish settlers.
