Amīn al-Husaynī

1896‐1974
Palestinian Arab political leader. Born into a distinguished family in Jerusalem. Educated at a Jewish school in Jerusalem, Al-Azhar Academy in Cairo, and a law school in Istanbul, he participated in the Arab Revolt during World War I. He was arrested at a mass demonstration in Jerusalem in 1920, but was pardoned with the intervention of British authorities, and became Mufti of Jerusalem in 1921. In 1922, he became Speaker of the Supreme Muslim Council, which had the authority to manage the waqfs in Palestine. In the conflict with Jewish immigrants that intensified after the Western Wall incident in 1929, he incited religious conflict and even stimulated armed activity by Jewish settlers.

パレスティナ･アラブの政治指導者。エルサレムの名門の生れ。エルサレムのユダヤ教学校，カイロのアズハル学院，イスタンブールの法律学校に学び，第1次世界大戦下アラブ反乱に参加した。1920年のエルサレムの大衆デモで逮捕されたが，イギリス当局の介入で許され，21年エルサレムのムフティーとなり，22年にはパレスティナのワクフ管理の権限をもつムスリム最高会議議長に就任。29年の嘆きの壁事件で激化したユダヤ人移民との紛争で，宗教的対立を扇動し，ユダヤ人入植者の武装活動をも刺激した。
