Japanese: マス･コミュニケーション（英語表記）mass communication

Mass media is a medium for mass-producing uniform content, such as newspapers and magazines printed on high-speed rotary presses, radio, television, and movies, that transmits large amounts of information to the masses. It can also be translated as "mass communication" or "mass report," but the Japanese-specific contraction "mass komi" is more commonly used, and in this case it can also refer to the senders who produce the information (newspaper companies, publishers, broadcasting stations, etc.). Mass media is characterized by its speed, large number of recipients, and one-way flow of information. On the other hand, the opposite concept based on the number of recipients is the Japanese-English term "mini-comi," personal communication, which is two-way in contrast to the one-way nature of mass media, and word of mouth, which refers to people speaking directly to others through the media of mass media.

マス･メディア(画一的な内容を大量生産する媒体。高速輪転機で印刷された新聞や雑誌，ラジオとテレビ，映画など)を用いて大量(マス)の情報を大衆(マス)に伝達するコミュニケーション。〈大衆伝達〉〈大衆通報〉などの訳語もあるが，〈マスコミ〉という日本独特の短縮形が愛用されており，この場合情報を生産する送り手(新聞社，出版社，放送局など)をさすこともある。マスコミの特徴は，速報性，受け手の大量性，情報の流れの一方通行one‐way性などにあるが，一方，受け手の量を基準にした反対概念に和製英語の〈ミニコミ〉，マスコミの一方通行性に対して双方通行two‐way性をもつパーソナル･コミュニケーションpersonal communication，マスコミのメディアによる媒介に対しての人間の他人へ対する直接の語りかけをさす〈口コミ〉などがある。
