Ohara Goko

Noh piece. Third piece. Five schools of current play. The Kita school writes it as "Ohara Miyuki." Author unknown. A faithful stage adaptation of the finale of "The Tale of the Heike." Kenreimon'in (shite), who experienced the downfall of her clan, spends her days training as a Buddhist monk at Jakkoin with two other nuns. On an early summer day when her father-in-law, Emperor Goshirakawa (tsure), visits accompanied by Middle Counselor Madarinokoji (waki), the Empress tearfully recounts her experiences of the six realms of heaven, human, asura, beast, hungry ghost, and hell, as well as the end of her son, the former emperor. Eventually, the Empress clings to a pillar in her hermitage to see off the Emperor's return. This is a unique Noh play that has no dance elements at all, even though it is a mysterious Noh play with a noble woman as the shite. Because it requires dignity in particular, it is called one of the Three Women's Noh plays, along with "Yang Guifei" and "Teika," and is treated with great respect.

能の曲目。三番目物。五流現行曲。喜多流は「小原御幸」と表記する。作者不明。『平家物語』のフィナーレを忠実に舞台化した能。一門の滅亡を体験した建礼門院(けんれいもんいん)（シテ）は、2人の尼とともに寂光院(じゃっこういん)に仏門修行の日々を送っている。舅(しゅうと)にあたる後白河(ごしらかわ)法皇（ツレ）が万里小路中納言(までのこうじちゅうなごん)（ワキ）を従えて訪れた初夏の日、女院は天上、人間、修羅(しゅら)、畜生(ちくしょう)、餓鬼(がき)、地獄の六道(ろくどう)のすべてにわたる体験と、わが子である先帝の最後を涙ながらに物語る。やがて女院は法皇の還幸を庵(いおり)の柱にすがって見送る。高貴の女性をシテとする幽玄能でありながら、まったく舞の要素がない異色の能。とくに品格を要することから『楊貴妃(ようきひ)』『定家(ていか)』とともに三婦人の能とよばれ重く扱われる。
