A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla. It is small and resembles the pudu, the smallest deer, but is slightly larger and usually has a vortex of hair on the top of the head and in front of the eyes. It has a long, slender face, and some individuals have canines in the upper jaw. Its horns are short and branchless. Its body color is a beautiful glossy orange or reddish brown on the back, and white on the chin, neck, underbelly, and inside of the limbs. Its body length is 95-135 cm, shoulder height 66-75 cm, tail length 10-15 cm, and weight 17-23 kg. Mazama is the name given by the indigenous people. 偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。小型で最小のシカであるプーズーに似るが,やや大きく,ふつう頭頂部と目の前方に毛のうずがあるのが特徴。顔は細長く,一部の個体には上あごに犬歯がある。角は短く,枝はない。体色は,背側が美しい光沢のある橙色ないし赤褐色,あご,首,下腹部,四肢の内側が白色。体長95~135cm,肩高66~75cm,尾長10~15cm,体重17~23kg。マザマは原住民による呼称。メキシコ中部からボリビア,パラグアイ,アルゼンチン北部にかけての森林にすむ。
