In 1864, a four-way joint fleet consisting of Britain, America, France, and the Netherlands attacked the Choshu Domain (Hagi Domain) through the Shimonoseki Strait, some of whose troops landed and fought with the domain's soldiers, destroying all the artillery batteries along the strait. It is also known as the Shimonoseki Bombardment Incident by the Four-way Joint Fleet. The purpose of the attack was to retaliate against the Choshu Domain's previous year's bombardment of American, French, and Dutch ships sailing through the strait in order to carry out its expulsion of foreigners, and to crush the anti-foreign ideology of the Choshu Domain and the shogunate. This was the turning point for the sonno-joi faction within the Choshu Domain to abandon the expulsion of foreigners and turn to opening up the country. → Related topics Kiheitai | Sonno Joi Movement | Takasugi Shinsaku | Choshu Expedition | Movement to overthrow the Shogunate | Meiji Restoration Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
