…By the time the Edo period began, stone walls were built that had almost no gaps between the stones when viewed from the front. This method of construction for stone walls with no gaps was called kirikomihagi, while those with gaps were called uchikomihagi. The slope of the stone walls was also straight when they were still built as unglazed, but as they grew taller, they were given a bow-like sag to gradually transfer the weight from the vertical to the horizontal, and the upper part was made nearly vertical for defense. …
