Tale of the Crow and Heron Battle - Arokassen Monogatari

Japanese: 鴉鷺合戦物語 - あろかっせんものがたり

A Muromachi period tale about a battle between animals. It is said to have been written by Ichijo Kaneyoshi. Higashino Ichinosuke Makuro, a crow from Gion Forest, fell in love with the daughter of Yamashiro no Kami Tsumori Masamoto, a heron from Nakakamo Forest, but was rejected. So he gathered his allies and attacked Nakakamo. On the side of the black bird Makuro were the eagle Dewa Hokyo and the chicken Water Clock Hakase, while on the side of the white bird Masamoto were the crane Kii no Kami and the blue heron Shinano no Kami, and a great battle ensued. The Crows were defeated, and the Crows' Shingen climbed Mount Koya, where he became a monk under the guidance of the Buddhist priest, and together with the victor, Shoso, they practiced nembutsu. This story was written later than "Shojin Gyoryu Monogatari" and is a novel of a different kind.

室町期の物語で動物どうしの擬軍記。一条兼良(かねら)作とも伝えられる。祇園(ぎおん)林の鴉(からす)である東市佐(ひがしのいちのすけ)真玄(まくろ)が、中鴨(なかかも)の森の鷺(さぎ)である山城守(やましろのかみ)津守正素(つもりまさもと)の女(むすめ)を思いそめ所望するが拒まれ、仲間を梟合(きゅうごう)し中鴨を攻めた。黒い鳥の真玄方には鵄(とび)出羽法橋(ほうきょう)、鶏(にわとり)漏刻博士が、白い鳥の正素方には鶴(つるの)紀伊守、青鷺信濃守(しなののかみ)らが集い、一大合戦となった。鴉方が敗れ、鴉の真玄は高野山(こうやさん)に登り、仏法僧の手で出家、勝者の正素もともに念仏修行した、という筋。『精進(しょうじん)魚類物語』より後出で、これと並ぶ異類小説である。
