Maglemose culture - Maglemose

A Mesolithic culture found in Northern Europe. It occurred after the end of the Ice Age and when forests gradually expanded, so it can be said to be a culture that adapted to the forests. Microliths are also found, but a defining feature of this culture is the appearance of stone axes for felling and working wood. There are also many bone and horn tools made from animal bones and horns. It is clear that there was a shift from the Paleolithic period, which focused on hunting colonial animals, to a balanced lifestyle of gathering, fishing, and hunting. The reference site is the Magremose site in Denmark.

北ヨーロッパにみられる中石器文化。氷河期が終わり、森林がしだいに拡大する時期にあたり、森林に適応した文化といえる。細石器もみられるが、この文化の特徴として、木材伐採用および木材加工用の石斧(せきふ)の出現があげられる。動物の骨や角でつくられた骨角器も数多い。旧石器時代の群棲(ぐんせい)動物の狩猟中心から、採集、漁労、狩猟のバランスのとれた生活に変化していったことが確かめられる。標準遺跡はデンマークのマグレモーゼ遺跡。
