Mr. Makabe

Japanese: 真壁氏 - まかべうじ

A medieval Hitachi samurai family. A branch of the Hitachi Daijo clan of the Kanmu Heishi clan. It is said to have originated in 1172 (Shoan 2), when Nagamoto, the son of Taki Naoki, built a castle at the site of the district office in Makabe County, Hitachi Province (now Makabe Town, Makabe County, Ibaraki Prefecture). Nagamoto became a retainer of the Kamakura Shogunate, and even after the main family of Hitachi Daijo was destroyed in the early Kamakura period, the Makabe clan prospered by dividing the land among the commoners who had the villages in Makabe County as their surnames, and played an important role as one of the seven branches of the Hitachi Daijo clan, serving as ambassadors for the July festival at Kashima Shrine, Ichinomiya in the same province. During the Nanboku-cho period, Makabe Mikishige assisted Kitabatake Chikafusa and established a base for the Southern Court in Hitachi together with the Oda, Seki, and Shimotsuma clans, but his son Takamoto switched to the Ashikaga side and maintained his family.

中世常陸の武家。桓武平氏常陸大掾（だいじよう）氏の分流。1172年(承安2)多気直幹の子長幹が常陸国真壁郡の郡衙跡(現，茨城県真壁郡真壁町)に居城を構えたところからおこるという。長幹は鎌倉幕府御家人となり，鎌倉初期に常陸大掾本宗家が滅びたあとも，真壁氏は真壁郡内の郷を名字とする庶族に分有させ繁栄，同国一宮鹿島社7月大祭の大使をつとめる常陸大掾氏七流の一つとして重きをなした。南北朝期，真壁幹重は北畠親房を助け，小田，関，下妻氏らとともに常陸に南朝の拠点を築いたが，その子高幹は足利方へ転じ家を保った。
