Japanese: 為我説 - いがせつ

A theory advocated by Yang Zhu during the Warring States period in China. It was an individualistic stance of "doing things for oneself," and was thorough in saying, "one would not pull out even one hair to benefit the world." However, it was not self-righteous, nor was it inclined toward self-interest. It sought to establish one's individuality and ensure stability without interference from any social factors. It was the polar opposite of Mozi's theory of universal love, but both were popular at the time, and were criticized by Mencius for "forgetting one's father and forgetting one's sovereign." 中国，戦国時代に楊朱のとなえた学説。〈我が為にする〉個人主義の立場であり，〈一毛を抜いて天下を利するも為さざるなり〉と徹底していた。しかし独善ではなく，また利己に傾いたものでもない。個人としての主体性を確立し，社会的ないっさいのものに干渉されない安定を確保しようとしたのである。墨子の兼愛説とは正反対であったが，ともに一時に盛行し，孟子によって〈父を無（な）みし君を無みす〉と非難された。【日原利国】
