A theory advocated by Yang Zhu during the Warring States period in China. It was an individualistic stance of "doing things for oneself," and was thorough in saying, "one would not pull out even one hair to benefit the world." However, it was not self-righteous, nor was it inclined toward self-interest. It sought to establish one's individuality and ensure stability without interference from any social factors. It was the polar opposite of Mozi's theory of universal love, but both were popular at the time, and were criticized by Mencius for "forgetting one's father and forgetting one's sovereign."
