A city in southwestern Nigeria. Located about 80km north of Lagos, on the east bank of the Ogun River. Surrounded by rock outcrops and a wall about 180m above sea level, the outside is a savannah area. Built around 1830. In 1893, the unified Egba Kingdom, formed through the mediation of the governor of the Lagos colony, merged with North and South Nigeria, and officially became a British protectorate. Connected to Lagos by rail, it is a distribution center for palm kernels, cocoa, fruits, cola nuts, cotton, rice, cassava, etc., and is famous for cotton textiles and dyeing crafts. Granite is produced in the south. There are many historical buildings such as churches and mosques, and there is also a teacher training school. Population 377,100 (1991 estimate). ナイジェリア南西部の都市。ラゴス北方約 80km,オグン川東岸に位置。標高約 180mの露岩群と城壁に囲まれる。その外側はサバナ地帯。 1830年頃建設。 93年ラゴス植民地の総督の調停により形成された統一エグバ王国が南北ナイジェリアと合併,正式にイギリス保護領となった。ラゴスと鉄道で結ばれ,パーム核,カカオをはじめ果物,コーラナッツ,綿花,米,キャッサバなどの集散地で,綿織物と染色工芸で有名。南部では花崗岩を産する。教会,モスクなど歴史的建造物が多く,教員養成学校もある。人口 37万 7100 (1991推計) 。
