［History］
Up until the beginning of the Meiji era, this area was part of Osumi Province and Satsuma Province, and during the Edo period it belonged to the Kagoshima Domain (Satsuma Domain). In 1871 (Meiji 4), after the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, part of Osumi Province, Satsuma Province, and Ryukyu Province belonged to Kagoshima Prefecture, while the rest belonged to Miyakonojo Prefecture. However, the following year, Ryukyu Province left Kagoshima Prefecture, and in 1873, Miyakonojo Prefecture was abolished and the current prefectural boundaries were established.
