Maeda Yugure

Japanese: 前田夕暮 - まえだゆうぐれ
Maeda Yugure

Poet. Born in Minamiyana Village, Osumi County, Kanagawa Prefecture (present-day Hadano City). His real name was Yozo. At the age of 21, he became a disciple of Onoe Saishu, and at the age of 25, he founded his own tanka society, Hakujitsusha, and published Sunflowers. At the age of 29, he founded Shiika (1911), which he continued to publish intermittently until his death, producing many disciples. His first collection of tanka, Harvest (1910), along with Bokusui Wakayama's collection Separation, published in the same year, marked an era, and Ota Mizuho called him a "double-poet." The collection includes the poem "Blooming trees, the day when you become my wife, April is still a long way away" and is a representative modern poem that is still widely known today. He also published 15 other poems such as "Shadows" (1912) and many essay collections, and "Water Source Region" (1932) played a leading role in free verse tanka.
