...An industrial city in the western part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Transcaucasus. Population 282,200 (1991). The city was named Gyandzha (before 1804 and 1918-35), Elizavetpol' (1804-1918), and in 1935 it was renamed Kirovabad after the revolutionary SM Kirov (Abad means "city" in Persian). It was renamed to its current name in 1989.
