COMSAT - Komu Sat (English spelling) COMSAT

COMSAT is the abbreviation for The Communications Satellite Corporation, an American satellite communications service company. It was absorbed by Lockheed Martin in September 1998, and was acquired by the BT Group, a major British communications company, in 2007. Comsat was founded in 1963 and was the largest investor representing the United States in the national policy company INTELSAT (International Telecommunications Satellite Organization) under the Communications Satellite Act, and was responsible for technical operations as the management contractor. Through its Intelsat satellites and earth stations, Comsat provided communications services to every corner of the United States and the world. Comsat also represented the United States in INMARSAT (International Maritime Satellite Organization). However, due to the emergence of communications satellite businesses other than Intelsat, and the diversification of communications services due to the spread of CATV and optical communications undersea cables, Comsat's performance deteriorated, and it was merged with Lockheed Martin in 1998. After the merger, it was integrated into Lockheed Martin's communications subsidiary, Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, but was later acquired by the British BT Group.

アメリカの衛星通信サービス会社The Communications Satellite Corporationで、COMSATはその略称。1998年9月ロッキード・マーチンに吸収合併され、2007年にはイギリスの大手通信事業者であるBTグループに買収された。コムサットは1963年に設立され、通信衛星法に基づく国策会社INTELSAT（インテルサット、国際電気通信衛星機構）において、アメリカを代表して最大の出資者であるとともに、技術運用面で管理業務契約者としての責任をもっていた。インテルサット衛星と地球局によって、コムサットは、アメリカと世界の隅々までの通信サービスを行っていた。またコムサットは、INMARSAT（インマルサット、国際海事衛星機構）においてもアメリカを代表していた。しかし、インテルサット以外の通信衛星事業がおこり、一方、CATV、光通信海底ケーブルなどの普及により通信サービスの多様化が進み、業績が悪化したため、1998年にロッキード・マーチンに合併された。合併後はロッキード・マーチンの通信部門の子会社ロッキード・マーチン・グローバル・テレコミュニケーションに統合された。しかしその後、イギリスのBTグループに買収されている。
