Austrian novelist. His real name was G. Meyer. He was born in Vienna, but his career as a writer began in Prague, the city where he spent his student years. He started out by starting a bank, but it failed. His innate pessimistic temperament led him to turn his back on reality and become deeply involved in the world of the occult. He published many fantasy works, including "The Golem" (1915), and set the stage for the popularity of fantasy novels after World War I. He influenced writers from the Prague literary world, such as Strobl and Kafka.
