Hattori Unokichi - Hattori Unokichi

Chinese philosopher and educational administrator. His pen name was Zuiken. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University. He served as a professor at Sanko and Tokyo Higher Normal School, and secretary to the Minister of Education. He witnessed the Boxer Uprising while studying in China. In the middle of his studies in Germany, he accepted an invitation from China and made an effort to open the Jingshi Daxuetang (the predecessor of Peking University) in Beijing. After returning to Japan (1908), he lectured on Chinese philosophy as a professor of humanities at Tokyo Imperial University, and based on Western philosophy and social thought, he provided a logical system for the study of rites. During that time, he founded Keijo Imperial University and served as its president, and later became president of Kokugakuin University and director of the Institute of Oriental Culture. He also presided over the Shibunkai, the Japan Kodokai, and the Japan-China Society. His books include "Thoughts on the Qing Dynasty," "China Studies," and "Outline of Oriental Ethics."

中国哲学者、文教行政家。号は随軒(ずいけん)。東京帝国大学哲学科卒業。三高と東京高等師範学校教授、文部大臣秘書官を歴任。清(しん)国留学中、義和団蜂起(ぎわだんほうき)に遭遇。ドイツ留学のなかばで清国の招聘(しょうへい)に応じ、北京(ペキン)の京師大学堂(北京大学の前身)の開設に尽力。帰国(1908)後、東京帝国大学文科教授として中国哲学を講じ、西洋哲学・社会思想を踏まえて、礼学(れいがく)に論理的体系を与えた。その間、京城(けいじょう)帝国大学を創設して総長を兼任、のち国学院大学学長、東方文化学院所長。また斯文(しぶん)会、日本弘道(こうどう)会、日華学会を主宰。著書に『清国通考』『支那(しな)研究』『東洋倫理綱要』など。
