Muybridge

Japanese:
Muybridge
British-born American photographer. Born in Kingston. Moved to the US with his family around 1850. Learned photography from a daguerreotype artist in San Francisco in the early 1860s. From the mid-1860s, took landscape photographs in Yosemite Valley and other places. In 1868, he accompanied a government survey team to Alaska, which had become US territory the previous year. In 1877, he succeeded in taking a snapshot of a galloping horse. The following year, he lined up 12 cameras parallel to the horse's path and succeeded in taking continuous photographs of the moving object, proving that the depiction of a galloping horse that had been depicted in paintings up until that point was false. In 1880, he invented the zoopraxiscope, a device that showed the movement of a movie-like sequence of photographs. With the support of the University of Pennsylvania, he continued his research into animal and human movement through photography, and compiled the results of his research in his book, Animal Movement, a Study of the Successive Forms of Animal Movement by Electrophotography (1887). He returned to England in 1889 and died there.
