The great desert in western Egypt. It means Western Desert in Arabic. Geographically, it is part of the Libyan Desert, and is a vast area without dry rivers (wadis) that stretches from the Nile River in the east to the Libyan border in the west and the Mediterranean Sea in the north. Its area is about 680,000 km2 , and it accounts for almost 70% of the total area of Egypt on the map. It is divided into two parts, Wadi al-Jadid Governorate (New Valley) in the south and Matruh Governorate in the north, by the 28°20′ north latitude line drawn from the vicinity of Minya in the Nile River basin to the Libyan border. It is a rocky, low-altitude plain, but it slopes gently from the southwest to the east and north, and the Qatara lowland is in the north, and the Gir Wakebir plateau at the southwestern end has mountains over 1,000 meters high. The oases of Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dafra, and Kharga are continuous from the northwest to the southeast, and the majority of the estimated 190,000 population is semi-nomadic. The Dakhla and Kharga oases are being developed as part of the New Valley Development Plan.
