《The Conflict Between Education and Religion》

...As a philosopher, he advocated the theory of phenomena as realism in works such as "A Dust of My World View" (1894) and "The Relationship between Knowledge and Reality" (1901), and is particularly known for his trilogy "The Philosophy of the Japanese Yangming School," "The Philosophy of the Japanese Ancient School," and "The Philosophy of the Japanese Neo-Confucian School" (1900-05). However, in the Meiji intellectual world, he is known as a scholar who consistently played the role of an ideologue of imperial nationalism, such as annotating the Imperial Rescript on Education in "The Interpretation of the Imperial Rescript" (1891), attacking Christianity as anti-national in "The Conflict between Education and Religion" (1893), and advocating national morality in "An Outline of National Morality" (1912). From the Uchimura Kanzo Disrespect Incident

...This was the first and most famous case of disrespect for the Imperial Rescript on Education that occurred after its promulgation. It was also an incident in the history of the suffering of Christianity in modern Japan, in which Christian faith was criticized as being anti-national and incompatible with the ideals of the modern Emperor-based state. The Ministry of Education immediately prepared a certified copy of the Imperial Rescript on Education, which was issued on October 30, 1890 (Meiji 23), and distributed it to public and private schools throughout the country. At that time, certified copies bearing the Meiji Emperor's "imperial signature" (handwritten signature and the Emperor's "imperial seal") were issued to schools directly under the Ministry of Education, and one was issued to the First Higher School, where Uchimura Kanzo worked as a part-time teacher, on December 25 of the same year.
