Galicia

A region in the northwestern tip of Spain. It is an autonomous community made up of the four provinces of La Coruna, Pontevedra, Lugo, and Orense. Its capital is Santiago de Compostela. It is dominated by hilly mountainous terrain, has a generally marine climate, and has the highest annual rainfall in Spain (1000-1500mm). The majority of the Galicians are of Celtic descent, and speak a language similar to Portuguese. Fishing is popular, with a large catch of sardines. Agriculture is often fragmented and low productivity, but livestock and dairy farming are thriving. The Celts invaded in the 6th century BC, and the Germanic Suebi in the 5th century. Muslims invaded in the early 8th century, but were reconquered by Christians and absorbed into the Kingdom of Asturias. The pilgrimage to Santiago, which began at the end of the 12th century, is famous.
