A special thermometer used to measure the temperature of deep water layers in oceans, lakes, and other bodies of water. It is lowered to the desired depth and left for about five minutes, after which a messenger is dropped along the cable from the ship to tip the thermometer over and pull it up. When it is overturned, the mercury column breaks and it is pulled up while maintaining the water temperature reading. It is often combined with a water sampler. → Related items Marine instruments Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
