…Among the popular songs that came to be accompanied by the shamisen, this is one of the oldest songs whose lyrics can be identified today, along with “Hosori” and “Katabachi.” From around the Kanei period (1624-44), it was performed in the pleasure quarters of Rokujo and Shimabara in Kyoto, and then became popular in Edo, where it was called “Edo Nosai.” It is said that “Nagebushi” was born from this Edo Nosai. …
