Two geniuses from Gyumon

…He moved to Tokyo to pursue a literary career rather than take over the family pharmacy business, and became a student of Koyo Ozaki, under whose guidance he published “Kikkotsuru” (The Tortoise Shell and Crane) at the age of 21 in 1896 (Meiji 29). After that, he was called one of the two talented writers of the Gyumon school, along with his senior student Kyoka Izumi, and published the long novel “Koibumi Nagashi” and other masterpieces, enchanting readers with the skill of their elegant prose. After the Russo-Japanese War, in 1905-06, he serialized the long novel “Seishun” in the Yomiuri Shimbun, depicting the joys and sorrows of the young people of his time, and became one of the most popular literary works in the world. …
