Juàzeiro (English spelling)

A city in the north of Bahia state on the central east coast of Brazil. The main settlement is a river port city located on the south bank of the São Francisco River, about 450 km northwest of the state capital, Salvador, and is connected by bridge to Petrolina, Pernambuco state, on the opposite bank. The city is about 370 m above sea level. It is a commercial center in the arid agricultural and pastoral areas, and a key transportation hub connecting the upper and middle reaches of the river inland with the Atlantic coast. Small boats can travel from the city to the upper reaches of the river and Pirapora in Minas Gerais state, and it is connected by road to Recife and Aracaju on the Atlantic coast, and by rail and road to Salvador. Population: 128,378 (1991 estimate).

ブラジル中部東岸，バイア州北部の都市。中心集落は州都サルバドルの北西約 450km，サンフランシスコ川南岸に位置する河港都市で，対岸のペルナンブコ州のペトロリナと橋で結ばれる。標高約 370m。乾燥地域の農牧地帯の商業中心地であるとともに，内陸の同川上・中流域と大西洋岸を結ぶ交通の要地で，市から同川上流部，ミナスジェライス州のピラポラまで小型船で航行でき，大西洋岸のレシフェ，アラカジュと道路で，サルバドルと鉄道，道路で結ばれる。人口 12万 8378 (1991推計) 。
