A city in the north of Bahia state on the central east coast of Brazil. The main settlement is a river port city located on the south bank of the São Francisco River, about 450 km northwest of the state capital, Salvador, and is connected by bridge to Petrolina, Pernambuco state, on the opposite bank. The city is about 370 m above sea level. It is a commercial center in the arid agricultural and pastoral areas, and a key transportation hub connecting the upper and middle reaches of the river inland with the Atlantic coast. Small boats can travel from the city to the upper reaches of the river and Pirapora in Minas Gerais state, and it is connected by road to Recife and Aracaju on the Atlantic coast, and by rail and road to Salvador.
