[Born] Around 560 B.C. Died 490 BC. Lemnos? Ancient Greek tyrant of Athens (reigned 528/7-510 BC). He succeeded his father Peisistratos as tyrant. At first he was a moderate ruler, protecting poets and artisans, and Athens prospered. However, after his brother Hipparchus was assassinated (514 BC), he became a tyrant. In 510 BC, he was expelled from Athens by the Spartan army, aided by exiles including Clisthenes of Athens, and fled to Sigeon, where he later joined Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire. He is said to have led the Persian army to the Battle of Marathon, and died on the way back. Hippias |
