Ancient Greek tyrant of Athens (reigned 528/7-510 BC). He succeeded his father Peisistratos as tyrant. At first he was a moderate ruler, protecting poets and artisans, and Athens prospered. However, after his brother Hipparchus was assassinated (514 BC), he became a tyrant. In 510 BC, he was expelled from Athens by the Spartan army, aided by exiles including Clisthenes of Athens, and fled to Sigeon, where he later joined Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire. He is said to have led the Persian army to the Battle of Marathon, and died on the way back.

Hippias of Elis

A Greek sophist who lived around the 5th century BCE. Born in Elis. A contemporary of Protagoras, he appears in Plato's dialogues Hippias the Great and Hippias the Minor. He was a man of great learning who was skilled in many arts, including mathematics, astronomy, grammar, poetry, music, heroic biographies, and handicrafts, and was said to be able to discuss any problem and answer any question.

古代ギリシア,アテネの僭主 (在位前 528/7~510) 。父ペイシストラトスの跡を継いで僭主となり,初めは穏健な支配者で,詩人や工人を保護し,アテネは繁栄したが,弟ヒッパルコスが暗殺 (前 514) されてのち,暴政を行うようになった。前 510年アテネのクリステネスをはじめとする亡命者たちの助力を得たスパルタ軍によってアテネから追放されシゲオンに逃れ,のちアケメネス朝ペルシアのダレイオス1世のもとに行った。マラトンの戦いのときにはペルシア軍を導いたといわれ,その帰途死んだといわれる。

前5世紀頃在世のギリシアのソフィスト。エリス出身。プロタゴラスの同時代者としてプラトンの対話篇『大ヒッピアス』『小ヒッピアス』に登場する。数学,天文学,文法,詩,音楽,英雄伝記,手工芸など多くの学芸に長じ,あらゆる問題を論じ,あらゆる質問に解答することができたといわれる博識家。
