An animal of the family Salamanderidae in the order Caudata in the class Amphibians. It is endemic to Hokkaido and is found widely in the lowlands and mountains of the island. It is 11 to 18 centimeters long. Its back is blackish brown or yellowish brown, and some individuals have tiny yellow spots scattered on them. It lays eggs in still water such as ponds, marshes, and ditches. The spawning season varies greatly from location to location, ranging from April to July, depending on the snow melting period. It attaches a pair of loosely coiled string-like egg sacs to dead branches underwater and lays around 100 eggs. Hokkaido is also home to the northern salamander, Salamandrella keyserlingii .
