Bordeaux mixture

A homemade fungicide made from copper sulfate and quicklime. It is effective as a protective agent against many types of pathogens, but cannot be expected to have a curative effect. The amount of copper sulfate and quicklime used varies depending on the type of crop used, so the general formula for its composition is basic copper sulfate, expressed as CuSO ₄ xCu(OH) ₂ yCa(OH) ₂ zH ₂ O. If the copper sulfate solution is not gradually added to the milk of lime to cause an alkaline reaction, the particles of the suspension will become coarse and the fungicide will not be effective. The effectiveness varies depending on the skill of the manufacturing method. In 1885, when a mixture of copper sulfate and lime was used in the Bordeaux region of France to prevent theft of grapes, the damage caused by downy mildew was reduced, and its fungicidal properties were discovered by Pierre-Marie-Alexis Millardet (1838-1902) of the University of Bordeaux, and it became popular all over the world. It became popular in Japan after it was used in a vineyard in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture in 1897 (Meiji 30).

硫酸銅と生石灰で自家調製する殺菌剤。多種類の病原菌に保護剤として有効であるが、治病的効果は期待できない。使用作物の種類によって硫酸銅と生石灰の使用量を変更するので、その組成の一般式はCuSO₄・xCu(OH)₂・yCa(OH)₂・zH₂Oで表される塩基性硫酸銅である。石灰乳の中へ硫酸銅水溶液を徐々に加えてアルカリ側で反応させないと、懸濁(けんだく)液の粒子が粗くなって殺菌効果を発揮しない。製法の巧拙により効力が変動する。1885年フランスのボルドー地方でブドウの盗難防止に硫酸銅と石灰の混合液を用いたところ、べと病の被害が少なくなったことから、ボルドー大学のミラルデPierre-Marie-Alexis Millardet（1838―1902）によって殺菌力が発見され、全世界に普及した。日本では1897年（明治30）茨城県牛久(うしく)のブドウ園で使われてから普及した。
