Historically, skilled workers were workers who gained experience in a task at the guild or manufacturing stage. After the Industrial Revolution, the spread of modern factory-based industry created a demand for a new level of skill that was different from empirical skills, and included specialized knowledge and scientific judgment. In Europe and the United States, skilled workers are paid high wages and form exclusive occupational unions in comparison with unskilled workers. In Japan, workers who can adapt to a wide range of tasks and can provide guidance are sometimes called multi-skilled workers.

歴史的にはギルドやマニュファクチュアの段階での，作業に経験的に習熟した労働者のこと。産業革命以後，近代的工場制工業の一般化により，経験的技能とは異なった専門的知識や科学的判断力をもった新たな質の熟練が要請されるにいたった。欧米ではこれら熟練労働者の賃金は高く，未熟練労働者に対して排他的な職業別組合を形成している。日本では広範囲な作業に適応し，かつ指導しうる労働者を多能工と呼ぶことがある。
