Enjugahama Beach

This coastline is in Mihama Town, in the mid-west of Wakayama Prefecture. It was once the coastline of Wadaura, Oike-no-sho, and was called Wada Matsubara, but in the early Showa period, the artist Kondo Koichiro gave it the name Enjugahama. It is about 6 kilometers north from the mouth of the Hidaka River. It is a low beach ridge 500 meters wide, and the Kishu Domain planted pine trees as a coastal forest, and when cutting them down was prohibited, it became Omatsubara. The beach is made of gravel, and the sea is deep so swimming is not allowed, but it has been made into a campsite, and it is included in Enju Coast Prefectural Natural Park along with Hinomisaki and Americamura.

和歌山県中西部、美浜(みはま)町の海岸。かつては小池荘(おいけのしょう)和田浦の海岸で和田松原とよばれていたが、昭和初期に画家の近藤浩一路(こういちろ)が煙樹ヶ浜と名づけたという。日高川河口から北へ約6キロメートル。幅500メートルの低い浜堤で、紀州藩が防潮林としてマツを植え、伐採を禁じ大松原となった。礫(れき)の浜で、海は深く水泳はできないが、キャンプ場になり、日ノ御埼(ひのみさき)やアメリカ村とともに煙樹海岸県立自然公園に含まれている。
